Improving growing techniques: Drip irrigation and plastic mulch for higher income.

Doen Nov (50) and Bou Von (69) from Banteay Meanchey in Cambodia were already growing vegetables. From generation to generation they have had experience in growing onion, tomato, cabbage, cauliflower next to rice. The married couple both come from a traditional farming background, and never had any other occupation. Nevertheless, when our field staff passed by their field one year ago, there were many opportunities for the couple to learn about innovative techniques that would increase their harvest results.

The features of their farm that caught most attention were the way drip irrigation installation and plastic mulch. Our staff informed them about the correct installation and implementation techniques, and since they have heard about us from neighboring farmers, they trusted the knowledge that we shared. From the word-to-mouth advertisements by farmers in the village, Doen Nov and Bou Von asked if they could learn more about land preparation for cucumber as well. Due to successful results on cucumber, the couple got interested in growing yard long bean, ridge gourd, wax gourd and corn.

Before East-West Seed they had an annual income of USD 1,250. With the addition of more vegetables combined with innovative techniques, their annual income accumulated to USD 1,700. With the additional income they are investing in drip irrigation for the vegetables, and expenses for their children. The couple often offer their field for farmer trainings in order to directly show the results to the interested neighboring farmers.
