21 May 2020

In light of the many shutdowns and social distancing measures enacted by governments around the world to help control the spread of the Covid-19 virus, East-West Seed has launched a series of web-based videos and communication initiatives to reach out to our social media followers and interested public.

EWS webinars design to meet urban growers as well as professional farmers' needs during the lockdown.  The project is also aiming to encourage more growing your own vegetables at home and increasing vegetable consumption for good health.

In Thailand, the local team organized live how-to sessions with its specialist on pumpkin and Kangkong, with the total view count of 11,600 for both videos. EWTH is planning to release more lessons about its most popular vegetables in the coming months. The videos can be viewed at www.facebook.com/Sorndangseed

East-West Seed Philippines produced pre-recorded video webinars on topics including container gardening, soil preparation, organic fertilizer concoctions, and seed-to-seedling management. The specialists and pathologists also hold live interactive sessions with followers every Tuesday and Thursday to answer queries regarding pest and disease management. The team in Indonesia regularly holds online meetings with followers on the Zoom app to discuss many topics regarding the pandemic situation as well as home gardening and urban farming. The most recent online meeting took place on April 30 with more than 50 participants from different backgrounds, including from universities, local communities, and local farmers.

EWS Latin America is holding webinars with customers and distributors to discuss topics on a variety of subjects, while also educating the public, maintaining contacts with customers, and boosting its brand image. The meetings began in March and will run until June. In the first two meetings, more than 350 people took part.

Finally, in India, East-West Seed co-hosted in a webinar organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry. Taking part in the webinar were more than 500 participants from 15 states around the country.

“The pandemic has shown the immense value of digital tools, and that agriculture cannot be left behind,” said Dilip Rajan, Managing Director, East-West Seed India.

“The Systematic application of digital tools will support sustainable production and timely supply, especially when food production and supply involves millions of smallholder farmers.”
